Lose 9 pounds in 11 days

The SECRET to Weight Loss and to losing 9 pounds in 11 days…

To lose weight you must EAT MORE THAN 3 MEALS PER DAY.

Let’s say that again, since it’s very important: “To lose weight you must eat MORE than 3 meals per day”…

That’s the first important reason why our diet works so well, since our diet gives you MORE THAN 3 MEALS PER DAY.

Eating more than 3 times per day has 2 important benefits:

1. It keeps your metabolism running fast and burning maximum calories.

2. It keeps your hunger “satisfied” each day, so that you won’t be feeling “weak” and “hungry” when using our diet.

*Remember that any successful diet must be easy to follow, because any diet which leaves you feeling “hungry” or “weak” will FAIL. That’s why our diet is easy to follow and gives plenty of meals per day, because we want our dieters to succeed without feeling hungry and weak.

10 simple ways to lose 10 pounds

Here are 10 simple ways to lose 10 pounds

I’ve highlighted a few for you here:

1. If you usually drink regular soda… stop! Lose more than two pounds
in a month without trying (estimating about 10 cans per week). One
12-ounce can of soda has 150-170 calories and no nutrition. Have ice
cold water or a can of diet soda if you like but limit the diet stuff
to one can per day.

2. Go for a walk. A brisk walk and just for 15 minutes, twice a day. In a month… there goes a pound!

3. Change the potato chips to pretzels. One serving of chips has 60
more calories than pretzels, and ten times more fat grams. Just
changing this snack will help you lose one half pound this month.
Better yet, switch to baby carrots and lose another half pound… for one
full pound!

4. Order a Jr. Whopper instead of the regular, and a side salad too.
The Junior-sized sandwich is plenty for most folks and is mighty
satisfying on its own. The original has 700 calories… the junior only
400 (eliminate the mayonnaise on the junior, and you’re cooking with
gas!) Save 390 calories on one sandwich and, assuming you eat out at
least twice a week, you’ll drop at least three quarters of a pound just
by switching from a large size to a smaller one.

5. Instead of sitting for hours in front of the television, get on your
exercise bike and pedal. Each time a commercial comes on, pedal! You’ll
burn about 200 calories. Do it at least five evenings per week during
your favorite program (figure you’ll be pedaling about 20 minutes a
day) and lose another pound!

Lose weight on the red wine diet

Nov 16 2006 Published by Lose 10 Pounds under eating habits, lose weight

Lose weight drinking red wine

Red wine could reduce weight, boost endurance and cut the risk of diabetes, researchers claim today.

A report claims that mice on a high calorie diet given low doses of the compound resveratrol, which is found in red wine, live substantially longer.

The chemical boosts the activity of sirtuins, which are proteins believed to help defend cells against damage and illness associated with old age, the report says.

Because resveratrol was found in the skin of red grapes, the work offered an explanation why the French were relatively healthy despite their high fat diet, said Prof Johan Auwerx in Strasbourg, head of the research team.

Evidence has now emerged from the team’s studies of diabetic mice showing that high levels of resveratrol could be used to cut fat and double exercise endurance by activating a longevity gene.

The work is published today in the journal Cell by Sirtris Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Prof Auwerx at the University Louis Pasteur.

The mice on high levels of the compound were able to exercise twice as long as their peers, lost weight and became more sensitive to insulin, reversing their diabetes.

In human studies, variants of the longevity gene — SIRT1, a sirtuin enzyme — were linked with similar changes in the metabolism, suggesting that people could experience the same effects as the mice.

The team traces the effects to improvements in the function of cellular powerhouses, or mitochondria.

They found that resveratrol increased the activity of a gene involved in the production of mitochondria through its effects on SIRT1.

They also showed in humans a link between genetic variation for SIRT1 and variation in the energy used, indicating that SIRT1 was a “key regulator”.

Eating and cooking healthy in minutes

Nov 15 2006 Published by Lose 10 Pounds under eating habits, meal replacement

Here’s how to eat healthy even if you’re always on the run like most of us.

A meeting ran late at work and now you’re dashing home, picking up the kids from day care on the way.

The last thing you feel like doing is cooking a nutritious dinner for the family before helping with homework, doing a load of laundry and taking the dog for a walk.

The easy option would be to pick up a pizza or fast food, but a niggling inner voice reminds you how unhealthy that habit can be.

Cooking a healthy meal doesn’t have to be time-consuming, said Elizabeth Bailey, a registered dietitian and the food and nutrition manager at Kaiser Permanente Santa Teresa Medical Center.

Rather, nutritious meals can often be prepared faster than most people think.

The key to fast, healthy meals is planning ahead, she said.

“If you haven’t planned ahead, you’re much more likely to get fast food,” she said.

“Most people have more time on the weekends, so take that time to plan the week ahead of you.

Look at a few recipes, go shopping and maybe even make a couple of meals that you can reheat later in the week.”

Along with planning your meals for the week, keep a few healthy staples – such as brown rice, frozen vegetables, olive oil, garlic, pasta and canned beans – on hand at all times.

These items can make up a healthy meal in a pinch, Bailey said.

“When you do take the time to prepare a meal, it’s a good idea to cook enough to stretch for two meals,” she explained.

“For example, if you’ve made a chicken, you can have a chicken breast, some brown rice and vegetables for dinner one night.

The next night, you can shred up the leftover meat and put it in an entree-sized salad, or mix it with some canned beans and make a burrito.”

Many South Valley businesses are making fast, healthy meals easier, too.

At Running Rooster in Hollister, customers can swing by and pick up entrees such as wood-roasted rosemary chicken, wild Pacific salmon with dill or an assortment of salads to take home.

Entrees can be taken home hot or cold for reheating.

“We have something called HMR – that’s home meal replacement- that helps people put healthy dinners on their tables at home,” said Elaine Stoddard, co-owner of Ragoots restaurant in Morgan Hill.

“People can bring home a whole rotisserie chicken, gourmet meatloaf, soup or one of the other things we have prepared and waiting for customers to pick up.

They can pick it up and have it on the table in 10 minutes.”

The regular fare at Ragoots is planned with nutrition and health in mind, too.

Nothing on the menu is fried, many meals are made with flat breads rather than regular breads, salad dressings are served on the side, extra-virgin olive oil is used in place of butter and soups are mostly broth-based rather than cream-based.

No fried foods are on the menu at Mainstreet Bistro in Hollister, either.

Instead, vegetables and meats are grilled, said owner Megan Ward.

“We also spend a lot of time preparing in advance,” she said.

“We make all the salad dressings from scratch, so we make up large batches, and we have a mixture of extra-virgin olive oil, herbs and fresh garlic that we use as a base in a lot of things, and we have that made up, too, and waiting in the fridge.

I do that at home, as well.

That way, if I want to make up some pasta or a salad really quickly, I’ve already got a sauce and dressing prepared in the fridge.

It’s so much healthier than having things like store-bought salad dressings, which often have sugar, corn starch and all kinds of stuff that isn’t good for our bodies.”

Both Ward and Bailey encourage people to wash fruits and vegetables as soon as they get home from the grocery store, and chop them up to include in a recipe planned for later in the week.

“If you have the produce washed, then it’s ready for whoever is hungry,” Bailey said.

“If you’re on the way out the door, you can grab a piece of fruit and it’s ready to eat.

If the kids are reaching into the fridge, they’ll have vegetables prepared for them to snack on.

Doing these things makes it easier to eat healthier foods.

Buying foods at the grocery store that require minimal preparation also helps speed up the cooking process, Bailey added.

Fish is another healthy food many people shy away from because they think it’s complicated to prepare, Bailey said, but the opposite is true.

Grocery stores often sell pre-cooked rotisserie chickens, which aren’t as expensive as people may think and are a great, healthy dinner option.

Nuts and dairy are bad for you and other diet myths

Nov 14 2006 Published by Lose 10 Pounds under diet myths, diet programs, eating habits

Nuts and dairy are bad for you and other diet myths:

woman eyeing cookies

When you’re ready to lose some weight, navigating the universe of diet advice can be daunting.

How do you separate fad from fact?

We took five top diet myths to a panel of dietitians to see which ones don’t stand up to reality.

Myth #1: I have a slow metabolism, so I’ll never lose weight.

“It’s rare that someone has a slow metabolism and that’s the only reason (they aren’t losing weight),” said cardiac dietitian Toni Kuehneman, who helps patients organize their diets at Alegent Health Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

In fact, while some beleaguered exercisers feel that people born with higher metabolisms have won the cosmic lottery, the fact is that heavier people tend to have higher metabolic rates, scientifically speaking.

that people with weight problems who have obesity have a higher basal metabolism compared to people who are lean,” Dr. Jim Levine, an obesity researcher at the Mayo Clinic, told ABCNews.

“Your basal metabolism is the calories you burn to keep your body going, so if your body is bigger, of course your basal metabolism is greater.”

While you can expect your metabolism to slow by 1 to 2 percent for every decade after age 30, it is easy to combat that with increased activity.

Kuehneman also suggested a technique she calls “intuitive eating,” which calls for small meals every three to four hours.

Which brings us to Myth No. 2: Skipping a meal is a good way to jump-start a weight-loss program

“Totally skipping a meal is a really bad idea,” said Wild Oats nutritionist Gina Moss, a registered dietician and licensed medical nutritional therapist.

“It causes your body to go into conservation mode.”

Dietitians said evolution kicks in quickly when you starve yourself, even temporarily, transporting your body back to the time when man first stood upright.

“It sends a message to your body, ‘Hey, I’m not getting sustenance.

I’m not getting energy, so I better hang on (to calories) as fat,’” said Lisa Lewis, a trainer with ShapeXpress, an all-female gym franchise.

Myth No. 3: Fine. I’ll eat. But only celery or cabbage soup or grapefruits.

The Internet has given new life to fad diets that promise rapid weight loss, and people on a deadline to lose weight before a big event often fall prey to their promises.

Kuehneman said she’s never read a single study that shows scientific benefits of such diets.

Still, the experts had to concede that the diets work for a while.

When you return to regular eating patterns, the weight comes back.”

“Everybody’s looking for the quick fix,” said Moss.

“They do work, in the sense that if (cabbage soup is) all you’re eating — it’s very low in fat, very low in calories and it fills you up.

After a while you’re going to get bored with that, and that’s the biggest reason fad diets fail.”

Myth No. 4:Ok. I’m adding variety, but I’m avoiding high-fat foods like nuts and dairy.

Dietitians said they consider a study from the University of Tennessee’s Dr. Michael Zemel to be groundbreaking proof that dairy actually helps weight loss.

A blind study found that women getting calcium by drinking milk and eating cheese lost the most fat and maintained the most lean body tissue.

Kuehneman said the key to eating dairy is making the right choices.

There are low- and no-fat yogurts, skim or 1 percent milk, and a new Robert’s Dairy product called “Skim Extra.”

It is skim milk enhanced with seaweed fibers that delivers the same mouth feel as 2 percent.

As for nuts — yes, they are high in calories and fat, but science shows it is the “good” fat.

“Nuts contain the essential fatty acids, linoleic and linolenic acids, which are vital for growth, healthy skin and hair, blood pressure control, immune response and blood clotting,” according to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

So enjoy them in moderation — portions are key to all weight loss, dietitians said.

Myth No. 5: Oprah told me not to eat after 7:30 p.m.

The queen of talk makes a weekly mantra of her weight-loss policies, which include a strict 7:30 p.m. cutoff for all eating each day.

But does the power of the advice match the power of Oprah Winfrey’s voice?

Even her own trainer allows some wiggle room.

“That’s what worked for her,” said Bob Greene, Winfrey’s personal trainer, answering a viewer’s question on Oprah.com.

Myth No. 6: Diet isn’t a four-letter word.

Kuehneman, Moss and Lewis concurred, saying a cutoff time is a good approach to prevent late-night overeating.

However, weight loss ultimately comes down to calories in and calories out, so you can eat any time of day as long as you don’t exceed the number of calories you’ve burned that day.

The key to debunking all diet myths, Kuehneman said, is to take apart the myth of diets themselves.

She said the very nature of a diet suggests some kind of short-term fix for a problem that requires a long-term, permanent adjustment.

A diet usually won’t be successful because (weight loss) has to be a lifestyle approach — a wellness approach,” Kuehneman said.

“We are born knowing when we’re full and knowing when we’re hungry.

That’s what we need to get in touch with again.”

Diet foods and weight loss

Diet foods and weight loss

Walk down the aisles of any grocery store and you’ll find an array of diet foods – low carb, low calorie, fat free, sugar free and more.

Americans spent almost $63 billion on diet foods last year.

But do they actually work to help you lose weight?

NewsChannel5 health team anchor Lee Jordan looked at many popular types of diet food to see how effective they are at helping you shed the pounds.

Experts said that diet frozen entrees can be great for readjusting your perception of portion size; however, for fairly active people, the amount of calories and protein in one of these frozen meals isn’t enough to keep them satisfied?

you should have at least 20 grams of protein in a meal.

Lose up to 20 Pounds in 30 Days

Some dieters turn to meal replacement shakes for two meals a day at roughly 250 calories.

Adding fruit on the side will up the fiber and nutritional benefit.

Many people find liquid diets difficult to stick with because we all crave the satisfaction of chewing.

Unfortunately, when people go off the liquid diet, they tend to gain all the weight back once they start eating normal food.

People on low-carb diets tend to eat more protein, which promotes satiety for longer periods.

Many use sugar alcohols, which can have a laxative effect.

“I have some issues with total low-carb, no carb thing, but look for balance of little fat, enough protein to balance fat and carbs, look to see if some fiber in carbs — especially in cereals for kids and things like that,” said one shopper.

Among the most popular weight-loss foods are reduced fat and fat-free products, with $35 billion in sales last year.

Big appetites can benefit from some of these products, but many of the foods are diet deceptions.

But low-fat or fat-free doesn’t necessarily mean low calorie, and you might be more satisfied having a small portion of the real thing.

Low-sugar and sugar-free products are still big sellers, especially chewing gum and soda.

These products are good for diabetics, since the low-calorie sweeteners don’t impact blood sugar.

But the American Diabetes Association said your risk of being overweight rises 65 percent for every diet soda you drink each day.
