Hello-

I was reading this article about celebrity workouts and how they stay in shape to look so good for their movies or shows and thought that some of what they do is crazy.

Who has time to workout for 3 hours a day or go on a 10k run before 10 am?

The article profiles several celebrities and their workouts and asks how realistic they are for ordinary folks like us who just want to lose a few pounds.

Here is what Sarah Jessica Parker does:

SJP runs every day, climbs stairs, does yoga, pumps iron and works out with her personal trainer for two hours a day.

Despite her sinewy arms and thin, wiry frame, which couldn’t have been achieved without an intense exercise regime, SJP still claims she’d rather “go to a dinner party than slave away in the gym”.

- Regime rating: 5/10

- Potential health risks:

None of this exercise is damaging in itself, but doing it every day for a long time can store up problems. Also excessive working out with weights can create a sinewy, unfeminine look as sported by SJP and Madonna.

- The real woman’s version:

Running up and down stairs is a good cardio work out, but just do it for five minutes a day.

That is just crazy.

And for most people that is just too much.

But then again, most of us don’t get paid millions of dollars to star in movies :o )

She can afford to workout like that.

All us mere mortals need to do is a few minutes of cardio and a few sets of resistance training to burn those extra calories for the day.

I came across this article the other day with 25 health secrets from the experts and it had some useful tips in it.

I wanted to share 7 of the better tips related to losing weight with you:

1. Swap the scales for a tape measure. Where fat is stored can be just as important as your weight. For women, if your waist is larger than 31.5ins (80cm), you risk developing diabetes. For men, it’s 37ins (94cm) or more (or 35ins/90cm if you’re Asian). If your measurements put you in danger, lose weight now!

2. Buy a pedometer and aim to take 10,000 steps a day. Those with a desk job might be shocked how far off that target they are. Keeping an eye on your steps throughout the day will encourage you to take the stairs or get off the bus a stop early.

3. Shun diet foods. Your body is clever at discovering what’s in the food you eat and you can’t fool it for long. Experiments show that once your body has realised a food’s appearance and taste don’t match its calorie content (such as with low-cal cakes or biscuits), it adjusts your hunger response so you no longer feel satisfied eating it.

4. Simplify your food choices. The pleasure of eating a food increases up to the third or fourth bite and then drops off. If you have lots of different foods on your plate, you prolong this sensory pleasure – which stops you feeling full. Simplify your diet and place fewer types of foods on your plate.

5. Choose foods that satisfy your hunger. According to Australian researchers, baked potatoes, porridge, oranges, apples, wholemeal pasta, beans and veggies rank highest on this scale. They’ll make you feel fuller on fewer calories, which makes it much easier to lose those unwanted pounds.

6. Be an early bird. Exercising early in the day means you’re more likely to stick at it. You kick-start your metabolism and boost feelgood endorphins and you’re less likely to cancel your workout because of distractions that crop up later in the day.

7. Go for a brisk walk every day to boost your energy. Sunlight can stimulate your brain to produce “happy” chemicals called endorphins, while the exercise will help to lower stress. All too often we run on empty, which can cause anxiety, exhaustion and depression.

And here’s one bonus tip that I like:

Bonus tip: Make sure you smile every day. A positive attitude can benefit you as much as not smoking, according to the American Psychological Association. And being happy could add up to eight years to your life – that’s certainly worth smiling about!

Try Yoga for weight loss

Yoga is revered for its power to relieve stress, increase flexibility, and build muscle tone. It is not, however, well known for promoting weight loss. So you might be surprised to learn that it can actually help us burn calories.

While they may not give us as much of a workout as aerobics, they combine weight loss and cardiovascular benefits with the muscle building and flexibility training of yoga. And for those who do not have the time to participate in two separate workout programs, they can be great options.

Other than being forms of exercise, yoga and aerobics seem to have little in common. But traditional yoga can enhance the effects of more intense workouts, and these newly popular styles of yoga can give us the best of both worlds. If other workout routines have left you disappointed, adding or switching to yoga might be the answer you’re looking for.

Can you believe how fast this year has gone by? They all seem to move faster with each passing year.

How did you do this year on your weight loss goal? Did you lose the few pounds you said you were going to lose at the beginning of 2007? What happened? How far did you make it into the year before you stopped working out and eating healthier? How many times did you make it to the gym before you stopped going?

Losing weight is not easy. If it was, there would be no obesity epidemic in America. It’s the same thing with getting rich. If making money was easy, we would all be doing it and not having to work so hard. The ads on TV or online want us to believe that losing fat is easy – take one pill a day and watch the pounds melt away. Sound familiar? I see the same ads all the time.

But, you can lose weight. You can lose 10 pounds in a year – with a little bit of effort. It does not take much. If you set a goal of losing ten pounds in a year – that’s less than 1 pound a month. To achieve that, all you need to do is eat 3500 less per month – that’s 117 calories a day. You would be surprised at how little that is. You do not have to give up all your favorite foods to cut out 100 calories a day from your diet.

Or, you can just start walking or exercising to burn those extra 100 calories. You can eat all the same, you do not have to change your diet, all you have to do is add exercise to your day and in one year’s time, 10 pounds will be gone.

How sexier will you look 10 pounds lighter? I like people checking me out and asking if I’ve lost weight. It makes me feel good and puts a smile on my face. I still need to lose a few more pounds but I’m happy with the pounds I’ve lost.

You can feel better about yourself by making a small modification to your life – eat 100 less calories a day or burn an extra 100 calories a day by exercising and you will lose 10 pounds in 2008 guaranteed.

Can you believe a new year is right around the corner? Time flies much too fast. Now is the time to start planning your New Year’s resolutions that you’ll keep for just a few weeks until you lose your motivation. :o )

We’re all guilty of it all the time. Until we make something a habit, losing 10 pounds or more is going to be on each upcoming year’s resolution list.

Here’s an article that can help you develop some healthy habits:

Are you looking to improve your life? Get healthier? Feel better? Here are ten great healthy habits to adopt this year for a happier, healthier, and potentially longer life.

1. Reduce stress. Stress affects our health in a very negative way. It affects our immune system. It affects our ability to sleep and to digest our food properly. If you’re looking for one thing you can do better for yourself and your health this year, it would be to find methods of reducing stress.

2. Drink more water. Not just because water is good for you but because when you drink more water you stop drinking soda or other sugary drinks. Diet soda isn’t much better because it’s full of artificial sweeteners and chemicals

3. Walk/exercise. Adding exercise to your day adds years to your life. You don’t have to run a marathon or become iron man triathletes, walking for 30 minutes a day is an excellent start. Plus, you’ll just feel better.

4. Get your vitamins. A well balanced diet is excellent; however a multi vitamin is an excellent tool for a little extra insurance. Plus, it’s an easy thing to add to your daily routine.

5. Eat more fruits and veggies. It goes without saying that eating your fruits and veggies is good for your health. Add one extra serving of fruits and veggies to your day and begin living a healthier life.

6. Eat less saturated fat. Instead of ordering a burger or a steak at dinner, consider chicken or fish.

7. Eat less sugar. Sugar causes a rapid rise in blood sugar and a general feeling of well being. It also causes a rapid drop in blood sugar and a feeling of no energy. Then you eat more sugar and the cycle repeats itself. This roller coaster of sugar highs and lows wreaks havoc on your body. The solution, eat less sugar and if you do choose to have a sugary snack, eat it with a protein so your body’s metabolism remains more stable.

8. Fish oil. Fish oil and omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in our bodies. It may help reduce cholesterol and may help protect your brain against degenerative diseases.

9. Go to the doctor. Are there regular tests you should be taking to test for hereditary illnesses or preventative measures that are appropriate to your age? Cancer screenings are the most common. Take the steps necessary to see your doctor this year.

10. Smile. Smiling reduces stress and puts you in a positive frame of mind. It’s scientifically proven that stress has a direct effect on how healthy a person is. Smile, you’ll be glad you did.

Print out this list and tape it somewhere you can see it everyday so you can start working on building up healthy habits.
