Although we are becoming a more health conscious society, it boggles the mind to understand why obesity is on the rise, especially in children. The rate at which children ages 2 to 19 years are obese, has risen 17%.

That’s quite more than a startling statistic. It is a call to every parent to reassess their kids’ dietary habits and come up with a plan to reduce their weight gain before they develop chronic illness as well as cardiovascular problems.

The eating habits of children have always been a concern for parents, the community and the nation as a whole. Schools have repeatedly changed the lunch menu to ensure all students were eating balanced and nutritional meals. States have banned trans fat in fast food restaurants and other establishments due to the increase in obesity among children and adults.

How can we, as parents, ensure our children are following the nutritional guidelines to achieve a healthy mind and body? Certainly, the foods that are prepared for kids at home are healthy and contain all the nutrients they need. But when kids are not at home, how does a parent ensure they are not consuming fast foods or snacks that are unhealthy?

It all begins at the beginning. Parents, who prepare foods for their children from the time they can hold a spoon, have been adhering to a healthy diet not just for the kids but for themselves as well. In addition, vegetarian diets have become an alternative method to conventional foods because there is a growing concern that children are not receiving the proper nutrients, vitamins and minerals on a daily basis.

Everyone is involved in the crusade against obesity and healthy eating for kids has become the number one priority. As parents, we want our children to live happy and healthy lives void of illness or pain. To achieve any goal takes hard work and perseverance, and the battle against obesity has just begun. It will take time and research but we will prevail in bringing our children’s health to where it should be.

Healthy eating habits can start when we are kids. Teach them how to eat better foods and make better choices and you’ll prepare them for a healthy lifestyle without all the problems related to obesity.

How to eat more fruits and vegetables

You’ve seen it time and again that you need to eat more fruits and vegetables but how many do you eat? Adding fruits and veggies to your diet is probably the simplest diet plan available.

Fruits and vegetables are low in calories and have more fiber than other foods. When you add fruits and veggies to your meals, you cut down your fat intake and you’ll be able to control your weight better.

Fruits and veggies also have vital vitamins and minerals which we do not get from all the processed foods and fast foods we eat.

One tip I use to eat more fruits is buy a big 2-3 pound bag of frozen fruit, usually blueberries, and add it to my breakfast or add it to a snack with walnuts and granola.

I also add baby carrots as my side dish with my sandwiches instead of a bag of chips.

Instead of eating a regular potato, eat a sweet potato instead. Add some cinnamon and a small amount of butter to get it even sweeter.

Here’s how to eat more fruits and vegetables even when you’re busy – put your favorite fruits – bananas, strawberries and blueberries in a blender, add some protein powder and blend – you’ll have a healthy snack that will keep you full for hours.

Buy some dried fruit – raisins, apples, dates, banana chips – and snack on that when you’re hungry.

How to drink more water

We all know that drinking water helps to keep you full and helps you lose weight, but we still don’t drink that much of it. So how do you drink more water?

Here’s a couple more tips on how to drink more water:

Add grape, cranberry, and apple juice to a glass of water. Mix half a glass of water with half of glass of grape juice and you have a healthy drink instead of empty calories like in soda. Grape juice does have a high amount of sugar in it but the sugar is from grapes which provide nutritious vitamins and minerals which soda and alcohol do not have.

Brew a cup of green tea or yerba mate tea to drink more H2O. Sweeten it with stevia or honey instead of sugar. Add a splash of lemon juice and you have a nice cup of tea. If you needed another reason to drink tea, green tea and yerba mate are high in antioxidants as well and provide several heart healthy benefits.

With so much advice and research out there on nutrition and dieting, how do you know what to listen to and how to eat healthy?

This post will give you some general tips about eating healthier. If you’re like most people you don’t want to eat bland foods that taste like cardboard.

If those are your only options then dieting and eating better are likely not to be your top priorities.

There are not too many people who can go eating the same things for the rest of their lives that have no flavor.

Fruits like strawberries, watermelon, oranges, bananas and blueberries are all loaded with vitamins and minerals and taste good. You can eat as many of these as you want. Add them into your meals as side items. Add some frozen blueberries into your morning oatmeal or cereal to add some healthy taste to your breakfast.

Granola is a healthy combination of whole grains, nuts, honey and dried fruits like cranberries and raising and coconut. Some flavors of granola also combine flax seed which contains omega 3 fatty acids which are essential to your body’s daily functioning.

At Sam’s Club they sell a brand of granola called Bear Naked that contains no high fructose corn syrup and tastes good. You can combine it with yogurt to give it some crunch. Eating granola instead of a candy bar is a healthy snack alternative.

Sodas and diet sodas. Neither one is good for you. So avoid them. Replace them with healthy drinks – the best one being water. Try adding some 100% grape juice to give it a sweet flavor. Or try adding some lemon juice to give it a bit of a sour flavor.

You can dilute any fruit juice with water to get the sweetness you want without all the calories. Even though grape juice is healthy for you, it does contain a lot of sugars.

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram compared to 9 calories per gram for fat and 4 calories per gram for carbs.

Red wine is the only alcoholic drink you can consume due to its health benefits. One to two glasses a day is enough to get the health benefits.

Be sure to read the food labels and see just exactly how much you can eat that constitutes as a serving.

Here’s an example: eating a piece of dark chocolate everyday is good for your heart but the serving size on a Hershey’s bag is 4 pieces which adds up to over 200 calories when all you need is half of one piece to get the heart benefits.

Take the time to read the labels and watch the calories.

The advice on how to eat healthy is not new.

It is the same now as it has been in the past.

Which weight loss product should you buy?

If you want to lose weight and that includes most of us, even me, then how do you decide which weight loss program to buy? There are so many choices, each offering a guaranteed way to help you lose 10 pounds, 20 pounds, or 30 pounds fast.

But how do you decide which one will work for you?

You have to find a program that fits into your habits or that can change your habits effectively.
