Diet foods and weight loss

Walk down the aisles of any grocery store and you’ll find an array of diet foods – low carb, low calorie, fat free, sugar free and more.

Americans spent almost $63 billion on diet foods last year.

But do they actually work to help you lose weight?

NewsChannel5 health team anchor Lee Jordan looked at many popular types of diet food to see how effective they are at helping you shed the pounds.

Experts said that diet frozen entrees can be great for readjusting your perception of portion size; however, for fairly active people, the amount of calories and protein in one of these frozen meals isn’t enough to keep them satisfied?

you should have at least 20 grams of protein in a meal.

Some dieters turn to meal replacement shakes for two meals a day at roughly 250 calories.

Adding fruit on the side will up the fiber and nutritional benefit.

Many people find liquid diets difficult to stick with because we all crave the satisfaction of chewing.

Unfortunately, when people go off the liquid diet, they tend to gain all the weight back once they start eating normal food.

People on low-carb diets tend to eat more protein, which promotes satiety for longer periods.

Many use sugar alcohols, which can have a laxative effect.

“I have some issues with total low-carb, no carb thing, but look for balance of little fat, enough protein to balance fat and carbs, look to see if some fiber in carbs — especially in cereals for kids and things like that,” said one shopper.

Among the most popular weight-loss foods are reduced fat and fat-free products, with $35 billion in sales last year.

Big appetites can benefit from some of these products, but many of the foods are diet deceptions.

But low-fat or fat-free doesn’t necessarily mean low calorie, and you might be more satisfied having a small portion of the real thing.

Low-sugar and sugar-free products are still big sellers, especially chewing gum and soda.

These products are good for diabetics, since the low-calorie sweeteners don’t impact blood sugar.

But the American Diabetes Association said your risk of being overweight rises 65 percent for every diet soda you drink each day.
