Lose weight drinking red wine
Red wine could reduce weight, boost endurance and cut the risk of diabetes, researchers claim today.
A report claims that mice on a high calorie diet given low doses of the compound resveratrol, which is found in red wine, live substantially longer.
The chemical boosts the activity of sirtuins, which are proteins believed to help defend cells against damage and illness associated with old age, the report says.
Because resveratrol was found in the skin of red grapes, the work offered an explanation why the French were relatively healthy despite their high fat diet, said Prof Johan Auwerx in Strasbourg, head of the research team.
Evidence has now emerged from the team’s studies of diabetic mice showing that high levels of resveratrol could be used to cut fat and double exercise endurance by activating a longevity gene.
The work is published today in the journal Cell by Sirtris Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Prof Auwerx at the University Louis Pasteur.
The mice on high levels of the compound were able to exercise twice as long as their peers, lost weight and became more sensitive to insulin, reversing their diabetes.
In human studies, variants of the longevity gene — SIRT1, a sirtuin enzyme — were linked with similar changes in the metabolism, suggesting that people could experience the same effects as the mice.
The team traces the effects to improvements in the function of cellular powerhouses, or mitochondria.
They found that resveratrol increased the activity of a gene involved in the production of mitochondria through its effects on SIRT1.
They also showed in humans a link between genetic variation for SIRT1 and variation in the energy used, indicating that SIRT1 was a “key regulator”.
