Here are some tips for healthful after-school snacks for kids:

Remember, there are no bad foods, just foods to eat in moderation.

It can help to keep junk food out of the house to avoid the temptation of overeating.

If there’s not much going on after school, a small snack should suffice.

If a child has non-stop activities until well into the evening, a meal-replacement-size snack might be called for.

If so, substitute a smaller dinner upon returning home.

Offer water instead of soda or juice.

If kids feel the need for carbonation, try sparkling or seltzer water.

For a fruity flavor, mix with a little juice.

Even healthful snacks like fruit and yogurt have calories, so monitor intake to keep a balanced overall diet.

Try to keep fats and sodium down and fiber and nutrients high.

Look for lower-fat and lower-sugar options, especially in common snacks like cheese, peanut butter and yogurt.

Keep healthful snacks in a ready-to-eat form.

Store washed and cut-up vegetables and fruits right in the front of the shelves so they’re the first thing your kids see.

Keep non-perishable snacks or mixes, like fruit and nuts, in the car for hunger emergencies.

If you know you are going to be out for a while, bring a snack and cooler with cold water in the car with you.
